How We Became Sierra9

The story of Sierra9’s naming is a unique blend of inspiration and significance that reflects both personal and technological themes.

Camille Hambey, Founder of Sierra9, started her remarkable career path by joining the United States Air Force in 1995. She embarked on her military career, beginning a transformative journey that led her to the prestigious 303rd Intelligence Squadron. Stationed in South Korea, Camille found herself amidst the esteemed ranks of the squadron, renowned as the "crown jewel" of the intel community for its unwavering commitment to excellence.

It was within the tight bonds of the 303rd Squadron that Camille’s admiration for teamwork and dedication to excellence was truly crystallized. Inspired by her colleagues' unparalleled camaraderie and proficiency, she witnessed excellence in action. It was the best team she had ever worked with and for.

When she thinks about the word “excellence,” she thinks about her duration with her Squadron and the people she worked with in that snapshot of time. The Sierra9 name came from the squadron nickname “skivvy9” or “S9.”

The name “Sierra” also draws on the Spanish word for “mountain,” symbolizing strength, stability, and a connection to nature. The term Sierra is defined as “a range of mountains, especially with jagged peaks; a long, jagged mountain chain.” That’s life; that’s work. It’s a “mountain” with ups and downs, peaks and valleys.

With every mountain we climb, we get a new view. Every time we reach the peak, we have a very different view of what’s next. We see things we didn’t see before. We have a perspective we didn’t have before. When we’re in the climb, we’re just trying to scale the mountain, but you must know when to pause when the view has changed. With every promotion, with every high comes new information. You get a different view of life, a different view of leadership, a different view of yourself.

Sierra9 is more than just a name; it's a symbol of teamwork, resilience, and never settling for less than excellent. Camille’s legacy lives on, showing that with the spirit of a Sierra – fierce and unyielding – you can conquer any mountain that life throws your way.
